What Polyphenols Mean for Your Health

TL;DR

  • Polyphenols are naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • In extra virgin olive oil, polyphenols such as oleocanthal and hydroxytyrosol contribute to many of its health benefits.
  • Regular intake of polyphenol-rich foods is associated with better cardiovascular health and reduced oxidative stress.
  • The health impact of polyphenols depends on quality, freshness, and how foods are produced and stored.

When we say that Loukakos Estate extra virgin olive oil contains 870 mg/kg (2024/25 harvest) of polyphenols, we’re not just bragging about a number. We’re talking about one of the highest natural concentrations of these powerful compounds in the world—and the scientifically proven health benefits that come with it.

Polyphenols are natural antioxidants found in plant-based foods, and they play a major role in why extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is considered one of the healthiest fats you can consume. While many standard olive oils contain 50–150 mg/kg of polyphenols, our estate-grown EVOO boasts nine times that amount.

So what does that mean for your health? Let’s break it down.

1. Cardiovascular Protection

Polyphenols like oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol help reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol oxidation—a key contributor to atherosclerosis and heart disease. According to EU health claims, olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress when consumed at levels above 5 mg per 20g of oil. At 870 mg/kg, Loukakos Estate EVOO delivers this benefit and more. Learn more about the broader health benefits of olive oil.

2. Anti-Inflammatory Power

Certain polyphenols, especially oleocanthal, mimic the action of ibuprofen in the body. This means they can help reduce inflammation linked to chronic diseases such as arthritis, metabolic syndrome, and even some cancers. Our high-polyphenol content makes our oil a natural, daily anti-inflammatory agent.

3. Brain & Cognitive Health

Emerging studies show that high-polyphenol EVOO may reduce the risk of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s. These compounds help protect brain cells from oxidative damage and improve overall cognitive function. Daily intake may also enhance memory and learning capacity. These same compounds also contribute to anti-aging effects.

4. Immune System Support

With potent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, polyphenols help the body fend off pathogens and reduce the risk of illness. Their ability to modulate immune responses makes them a key player in maintaining a balanced and effective immune system.

5. Longevity and Aging Gracefully

The Mediterranean diet is associated with long life and low rates of chronic disease, and EVOO is its cornerstone. High-polyphenol olive oil helps combat oxidative stress at the cellular level, which is a fundamental factor in aging. Simply put: more antioxidants = healthier cells = a more resilient body. These benefits are core to long-life Mediterranean habits.

6. Gut Health and Your Microbiome

Polyphenols have a remarkable relationship with your digestive system. Because most are not absorbed in the small intestine, they pass through to the large intestine where they directly interact with your gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria that influence everything from digestion and immunity to mood. Research shows that olive polyphenols act as prebiotics, feeding beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium while inhibiting pathogenic strains.

    • Thanks for your question. In our region, harvest typically begins towards the end of November and continues throughout December. We then allow the oil to sit for a few weeks, to naturally filter, before we begin bottling around the beginning of February. Hope this helps.
