Benefits of High Polyphenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oils

Throughout history, olive oil has been used in many cultures as a natural remedy. Naturally packed with polyphenols and monounsaturated fatty acids, extra virgin olive oils high in polyphenols work in your body to protect from a number of conditions. Polyphenols are nature’s antioxidant and help protect blood lipids (fat) from being oxidised. 

This is also the basis of the EU Approved Health Claim  for Olive Oil polyphenols. Oxidative stress is linked to a number of conditions such as: high cholesterol, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, cancer and more. 

Researchers are discovering new health benefits for olive oil every day as well as working on creating more direct links with the specific components in olive oil.

We make a Health Claim on our olive oil approved by the European Union that most olive oils simply cannot make. Our olive oil has a very high level of polyphenols. Much higher than the usual Extra Virgin Olive Oils you can find which have an average polyphenol count under 250mg/kg.

OXIDATIVE STRESS

BRAIN FUNCTION

As with heart disease, polyphenols limit oxidation of lipids reducing the formation of plaques which travel through our blood system and cause blockages or reduced blood flow in our brains resulting in strokes. Recent studies have also shown that there is less possibility of age related cognitive decline (e.g. Alzheimer's) in older people who consume Healthy Olive Oil.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Olive oil fatty profile makes it the only oil and fat that is completely digested by the body and has been used as a remedy as far back as Ancient Greece. It helps in all stages of the digestive system from reducing reflux to improving digestion in the large intestine. It even helps with bad breath.

Many recent studies have shown that olive oil high in polyphenols exert a protective effect against certain malignant tumors (breast, prostate, endometrium, digestive tract and more). It is unclear what the direct relationship is but olive oils with higher polyphenols yielded better results in the studies than others.

HEART DISEASE

Olive oil helps maintain good levels of cholesterol by being a good source of HDL “good” Cholesterol whilst the polyphenols limit the oxidation of LDL “bad” Cholesterol which causes plaques. Plaques block arteries and limit the flow of blood to our heart, brain and the rest of our organs, causing heart attacks, brain strokes and more.

BONE HEALTH

Non conclusive research has shown that people with diets high in extra virgin olive oils are less likely to develop Rheumatoid Arthritis. The anti-inflammatory polyphenols also work as a natural relief for those who have developed it whilst also helping bone calcification by aiding in the absorption of calcium.
